The evening will be an opportunity to meet the artists, curators and other guests and together launch a new chapter of the festival Brno Art Open

Brno Art Open has been operating since 2008 (previously under the name Statues in the streets) as a biennial of contemporary art in public space, originally organized under the auspices of the Brno House of Arts. Since autumn 2024, its organisation has been taken over by the contributory organisation TIC Brno, which now organises the show as an annual summer festival running from June to October.

The main goal of the festival is to popularize contemporary art and stimulate public interest in cultural events in the city. The selection of works therefore takes into account the character of the specific place and the communicative nature of artistic interventions towards the general public. One of the main changes is the concentration of all the works in one specific location, thus creating the possibility to perceive the show as a coherent format and to experience it in one strong place.

For the 2025 edition, the site of the Yellow Hill was chosen, stretching from Mendl Square to the top of the mountain. The site itself carries a strong theme - it brings together the diverse layers of the urban environment and stories. This is why the selection of the works emphasized site-specific realizations, i.e. works created with a specific place in mind. In exceptional cases, the curators were not averse to placing existing works - provided they resonated with the context.

The chosen realisations include a wide range of media and artistic approaches - from object installations and murals to interventions in the landscape and artistic research. The curatorial team sought to capture a variety of environments: from overgrown, forgotten places to newly restored viewpoints to busier public spaces. The imaginary starting point of the show is Mendel Square, from where an artistic path leads between the wall of the Augustinian monastery and Pivovarská Street, through a skate park, a gardening colony, a park above the historical water tanks and the Masaryk Institute of Oncology to the Helgoland site - a rocky formation that is part of Brno's urban wilderness.

A secondary but important aim of the show is to draw attention to this extraordinary location, which remains almost unknown and undiscovered even for many Brno residents.
